Description
Bygone Days: Pen and ink drawing and diluted ink washes plus digital sepia effect.
My ink illustration of how I imagine life on the canals back in the early Victorian period in England, as seen by a child.
Historical Note: At the earlier development of the English industrial revolution, transporting larger and much heavier loads by horse and cart proved impractical. One horse can pull a barge through the water with 40 times the load that could be pulled by the same horse with a cart! A network of canals were developed to link towns and cities by the most direct route largely by converting existing rivers. These canals became the Victorian equivalent of our modern motorways and the necessary forerunner of the railways by a century.

David, your sensitivity to carefully presented and researched detail and to atmosphere is spellbinding. This calming sepia effect works wonderfully and loses nothing from having less color than most of your lovely works. On the contrary, the quiet ambiance seems to be highlighted. Not a pen stroke too many or out of place. The steps taken by man, dog and horse are so perfectly in unison.Just fascinatingly interesting and beautiful. L/F
